About Australia

Bill Bryson in his book entitled 'Down Under' describes Australia as 'the driest, flattest, hottest, more infertile and climatically aggressive of all the inhabited continents and still Australia teems with life...'

He also goes on to tell us that Australia has more things that can kill you than anywhere else. I'm not a snake or spider fan personally, however I can't say I've come across too many deadly creatures in my lifetime (except for the brown snake I nearly trod on hiking near Noosa in Queensland).

While I enjoyed reading Bryson, I prefer Dorothea Mackellar's description of Australia in 'My Country' (excerpt below) ;

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains,
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me '

This is only the first paragraph by the way! But it certainly makes me feel closer to home by reading it.

For some people that I've talked to here in Blighty, it's too far to travel, but if people dared to fly the 19 hours or so they would find a country that offers such contrasts. If you're after a cooler climate then Tasmania or Victoria may be where you go or if you're after warmth and wide sandy beaches then Queensland can offer the best in the world.

Most tourists typically head to the more renowned such as Sydney or Melbourne however my recommendation is to get off the beaten track, go to Adelaide and head to the wine regions such as the Barossa Valley for some of the best wine in the world. Or if you're after a hike and some camping go to the Flinders Ranges.

I've dedicated this page to my home country for those of you that are not from there. If you would like tips on where to go and what to do particularly with regards to South Australia feel free to email me. In the meantime below are some of H's photo's ;
